Susan, not wanting to pry at all! but can you share with me about your illness that limits your activity?? I will be having joint fusion of big toe Dec 3rd & am pretty depressed about the whole thing. This is 3rd surgery on this foot & I already spent the last year getting balance back & now have to start all over again. Can you spell pissed? I'm actually wallowing & feeling sorry for myself tonight ... but I'll get over it! Not the end of the world. Figure I can lift weights while in a wheelchair for six weeks <<< shameless wallow :<)

It's ok to wallow .... then get over it :) I had 3 surgeries on my left foot after shattering it 5 years ago. You'd be surprised how much exercise you can get in while you're non weight bearing!

I was diagnosed in May with atypical Meniere's disease, which is an inner ear disorder that causes vertigo and balance issues. While I have gotten significantly better over the past 6 months I still struggle with dizziness on a fairly regular basis. It makes it impossible for me right now to do certain exercises that used to be part of my normal routine (e.g., step ups), HIIT, although I'm hopeful that I'll continue to improve to the point where I have more good days than not so good.

    hey there..
just came upon your blog via the jillian michaels website. if you haven't stumbled across him already you might want to take a look at robb wolf (just google him!). he is a proponent of the paleo diet and crossfit workouts. interesting stuff..especially on gluten and fish oil.

Hi Anita ... thanks for stopping by my blog! I appreciate it :)

I'll have to check out Robb Wolf, but full disclosure --- I'm not a huge fan of the Paleo diet. Besides the theoretical issues I simply cannot support a diet that omits legumes and whole grains simply on the basis of unsubstantiated information that our ancestors didn't have access to these foods.

For me it's an issue that the blacklisted foods do not have adequate scientific justification for avoidance. Fact is, many of the
"bad" foods have multiple research-supported benefits.

My preference is to follow an anti-inflammatory diet, which truth be told, isn't that different from Paleo -- yet it is more scientifically based.

    Hey Susan,
I read some of your comments on Women's Health while searching for "low impact" workouts. I have a torn meniscus and ACL and would like to find exercises I can do while not further damaging my knee. Any suggestions where I should look?
    Thanks!

    Hi Meghan,

Sorry to hear about your knee injuries. A partially torn ACL can benefit from rehab but due to the nature of this type of injury, I would be reticent to make any suggestions other than having you speak to a qualified physical therapist.

I really do urge you to NOT look for an answer to your question online. You'll have no problem finding people and/or information in answer to your question ... but you will need to live with the repercussion's.

Have your doctor recommend a physical therapist who will provide you with at home exercises. They'll also likely have you fitted with a knee brace to stabilize your knee.

    Good luck!

    Hi April,

What pops out immediately to me in your email is that you're not getting nearly enough sleep. Based on your comment you're sleeping 5 hours per day, which is putting your body under alot of stress. Ultimately, this stress will increase Cortisol levels which in turn can cause weight gain.

I really cannot stress how important it is to give your body adequate rest.

Based on your work schedule, something like this may work for you:

    Sleep: 9 am - 5 pm
    Breakfast: 6 pm
Exercise: 8 am - 9:30 pm (this is plenty of time for strength training and cardio)
    Work: 11 pm - 7 am
    Dinner: 7:30 am

    Hope this helps April!
