It’s super hard to believe that summer is over and the new school year is upon us!
While Catapult Fitness Blog focuses on fitness and nutrition for adults good habits start early in life, at home and in the schools. Now is the time for parents to speak out and let Congress know your thoughts on the food our children receive through The Child Nutrition Programs which include the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.
According to the 2005 Study by the National Center for Health Statistics, 16 percent of children and adolescents aged six to 19 were overweight. The prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents has doubled and tripled, respectively, over a period of twenty-six years (1976-2002). Research shows that overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults and, therefore, are at greater risk for associated health problems.
I Googled the key words School Breakfast Menu and School Lunch Menu, and here are some of the tasty delights awaiting some kids as they head back to school:
Ham & Cheese Croissant Sandwich
French Toast Sticks
Stuffed Crust Pizza with Pepperoni
Nacho Grande
Ice Cream
Cookies
Chips
Many schools are striving to include healthier food options on their menus such as fruit, whole wheat bread, and tossed salads, but let’s be realistic – what would you expect a pre-teen or teenager to choose, a salad or nachos?
Every five years, Congress overhauls the Child Nutrition Act, which sets the level of funding for school meals. Right now, the USDA is collecting public comment to share with Congress during 2009, when the act will be renewed.
There has never been a better time for anyone who has a student, knows a student, is a student or ever was a student to speak up for better school meals.
Take Action Now!
You can let the U.S. Congress know your views by visiting completing the Public Comment and Submission Form for Use in Preparing for the 2009 Reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Programs and WIC. Click HERE to fill out that form.
The USDA is accepting comments through October 15, 2008.
Train hard; stay strong; educate your children.
Peace.

3 Responses to "Food Fight - The Fight For Better School Food"It such a shame that are world isn't smart enoough to figure out that the food our kids get at schools is very unhealthy. Hopefully more people will wake up and realize why our children are overweight. Very good post.
Great post. Give it a 10.
Among the eight components of a CSHP model are Physical Education and Family and Community Involvement. GAO studies show that the program strategy identified by experts as most important to prevent or reduce childhood obesity is "increasing physical activity," and that parental and social support for physical activity is associated with increased physical activity. http://www.phentermine-effects.com
