There's a fairly recent study getting alot of press lately.
A joint research effort out of Louisiana State University and the University of Florida found that supplementing with 1,000 mcg of Chromium Picolinate (CP) daily reduced hunger levels by 24%, food intake by 25%, and also reduced cravings for high-fat foods.
The full test of this study can be found here.
Study participants consisted of 42 overweight, but otherwise healthy women who had self-reported carbohydrate cravings. The duration of the study was 8-weeks with study participants randomly assigned to receive daily CP supplements or a placebo.
As mentioned, the study participants reduced overall food consumption by 25%, while those taking a placebo only reduced their food intake by 8%.
It's important to note that while the study participants receiving the CP supplementation did lose weight, it was relatively nominal at an average of 1.1 lb over the 8-week study. This suggests that perhaps participants did not maintain a consistent reduction in energy intake throughtout the study period.
My Two Cents:
First, I'm sure sales of Chromium Picolinate are going through the roof! Ok, maybe not, but there are certainly those folks who, after reading this study, are adding CP to their daily supplementation.
I'm not one of them.
Chromium naturally exists in foods and good sources include
- Romaine lettuce
- Onions
- Tomatoes
- Whole grain products
- Green beans
- Broccoli
- Lean meats
If CP does indeed help fight hunger cravings I think the argument worth making is that eating unprocessed, real food is the key to a sustainable weight loss program.
Train hard; stay strong.
Peace.
Susan

10 Responses to "New Means For Fighting Hunger Cravings?"I'm with you, Susan...seems to be a new study or recommended supplement out each month that promises to cut corners and work wonders...I like your suggestion to eat more unprocessed, natural foods (makes too much sense, doesn't it?) instead of trying to take "the easy way out" and pop another pill.
(Please pass the broccoli...)

I'm so glad you posted this! I just mentioned in a recent recipe (http://greenlitebites.com/2009/02/21/tropical-pineapple-core-smoothie/) I think think people turn to pills way to fast. We need to look to food. If we are eating what we are suppose to be eating we would be getting what we need to maintain a healthy body weight.
I'd like to link to you if that's ok!
Fred, YES! It makes perfect sense .... eat healthy, lose weight, Imagine that :)
Roni, I've just spent a few minutes on your site and definitely need to spend more time as I'm loving your recipes!!!! Going to have to take a few of them for a test drive myself :)
Roni - sent you an email via your website. Ping me back when you have a moment!
My own findings from my bodies reaction have told me a lot this past few days. I've been eating better for a couple weeks, concentrating more on fruit and vegetable intake, including the items you listed. Prior to that I was eating a lot of carbs. What I have found is with the changed eating I am not as axiety-filled to eat and eat and eat! This was especially evident yesterday when I had a few small slices of pizza for lunch and an oatmeal cookie. All I wanted to do was eat and satisfy my 'hunger' with more and more carbs for the rest of the day. Yet when I concentrate on less carbs more veg, I'm calmer and less likely to eat anything outside of my planned meals and snacks.
Lady Downsize!, I'm the same way!
It makes so much sense, when I eat sugar I want more sugar. CP has been associated to dieting for years but eventually people need to learn there is no magic pill and no substitute for fresh and natural foods. Great post!
"There's no magic pill" ... I couldn't have said it any better Scale Junkie. That about sums it all up!
When the news about CP first hit mainstream media years ago, I tried the pills and thought they did not work for me. Never associated that the good foods to eat were the foods that naturally contained the stuff.
The media didn't say anything about that. Now that I eat healthier and exercise much more, the simple processed carbs just don't have the same attractive quality to me.
