Exercise Anywhere Review and Sweepstakes

A few weeks ago NURU, LLC reached out to me asking if I would review their Exercise Anywhere fitness cards. The timing was uncanny as I had just watched an episode of The Biggest Loser where all except two teams were locked out of the gym for a week.

The teams that didn't have gym access were literally forced to exercise anywhere - on the beach, in the backyard, and in the living room. You know what? The team that "lost" in that episode was one of the two teams that had access to the gym. It just goes to show that you can exercise anywhere effectively, if you have the right know-how!

The Fitness Anywhere Flash Cards

My initial impression upon receiving the package was that the cards could have been a little larger, and a storage box would have been nice. Nothing major and just me being my picky self.

On closer inspection I found that there were a total of 30 cards and that the cards were tagged by category:
  • Basics (general information including a sample workout and glossary)
  • Chest (4 exercises)
  • Back (5 exercises)
  • Lower Body (5 exercises)
  • Shoulders (4 exercises)
  • Arms (5 exercises)
  • Abs (4 exercises)
  • Cardio Lab (information on interval training and a recommended routine)
The Basics cards provided some excellent information including the importance of switching up your routine on a regular basis and incorporating "supersets" and "negatives" into your workout. The sample routine provides a good template for putting together various programs using the exercises offered on the cards.

I found most of the exercises easy to follow based on the instructions provided. Many of the exercises should be staples within everyone's workout routine, but there were a few exercises involving using a towel that were entirely new to me.

The cards themselves are made of a laminated, lightweight paper and seem fairly sturdy. It would have been nice if the cards were color coded to make it easier to identify target muscle groups, but if you use the key ring which is provided (to keep the cards together), it's pretty simple to find what you're looking for.

Each section starts with a description of the target muscle group, lists the various exercises, and then provides an explanation and a graphic of the exercise being performed. Here's an example from the Back section:

My Two Cents

While I may have chosen to categorize some of the exercises differently (bird dogs and planks are listed as lower back exercises rather than core exercises), overall the exercise selection is pretty good.

If you are a hard-core strength training enthusiast, you likely won't garner much value from the Exercise Anywhere cards. However, these cards are a nice addition for anyone first getting started with a strength training program, a student who is looking to exercise in their dorm room, or anyone who travels and is looking for hotel room workout ideas.

What I really like about the Exercise Anywhere cards is that they drive home the point that there are plenty of exercises that you can do sans equipment. Not being able to afford a gym membership or the fact that you may be on the road a good deal of time is simply not valid excuses for not exercising.

If those are your excuses, at a cost of $9.95 (free shipping at the time of this posting), these cards are well worth the investment.

I would love to win a set of the Exercise Anywhere cards. This sounds exactly like what I need to get my weight/strength training routine up and going in my basement. I find that I get overwhelmed by the number of exercises I think I should be doing, and then don't end up doing any.

These cards sound so practical. I've recently begun a journey to get strong (instead of my typical quest to get skinny) and a do-anywhere strength-training routine might be just what I need. I'm always crunched for time (and can't always make it to the gym) and I never know where to start when exercising at home.

What a great contest offer! I've been lurking around this blog pretty much since it started (getting your URL off your signature post at that "celebrity" site)...I haven't commented to date but this was the motivation I needed.
I'd like to win the cards because at the end of the month I have a trip to Costa Rica upcoming up...we'll be in a remote part of the country and I've already started to panic a bit about what I would do for exercise without the usual gym stuff around. These cards would help tremendously with the preparation and execution of an exercise regime while I'm there.
    Cheers!

Seleav, glad that after all this time you were motivated to leave a comment :) Hopefully just the first of many!!

Being a work at home mom with small kids, chances are someone is sick or schedules are such that I can't make it to the gym.

These cards would be great to help me out on those days where I really need to get some exercise (ME time) in and just can't get out of the house.

These Exercise Anywhere cards are a great idea for home and travel. I really like the fact that the cards are detailed and show proper form. With exercise and diet, I've dropped 2 sizes since December. Thanks for the contest!

Nicole - it sounds like you have your hands full!!! In a good way though :)

Diane, congrats on your success to date!! 2 dress sizes since December? That's pretty terrific. How much weight have you lost? What workouts are you currently doing?

Hi Susan, just dropping by here. I see that you got your new blog set up. It's looking really nice!

I like the idea of the exercise anywhere flash cards although I have all the workouts that I need with TT...LOL! I would love to have the TRX suspension training though...haha. I'm a sucker for training equipment.

    Keep up the great work!

Anna, yeah ... Craig manages to keep everyone quite busy who uses Turbulence Training! So many workouts, so little time.

I don't own the TRX system myself, but I got the chance to give it a test drive about a month ago. It's definitely on my "wish" list. Kicked my you-know-what.

Hey, Susan! I like the new contest! Summer schedule is just around the corner for me (although by the looks of it outside, we've got a few months), which really throws my typical gym schedule for a loop. I'm not able to get to gym nearly as much. The cards would be super handy for those days spent at my grandparents lake home. Hopefully I could get some family members to "play along" while we enjoy the Minnesota summer!

    Have a great day!

    Hi Susan,

I just noticed that I am one of your contest winners! Thank you so much. I am looking forward to using the Exercise Anywhere cards and telling all of my friends and family about them and your great site!

I have lost 15 pounds since December 1st (I really challenged myself by starting before the holidays!)I started tracking my calorie intake, but yoga, weights and my Wii games have helped the most. Exercise really firms you up!
