Sugar Kills

I wanted a nice catchy title for this posting to go along with the image of the new subway billboards appearing all over New York this week:

The beverage in the billboard looks to me to be a 16 oz bottle of iced tea which would have around 42 grams of sugar . That's 10 teaspoons of sugar just from one bottle of iced tea.

If you drink two of these beverages per day, you're probably fat. Drink 4 of these per day (and yes, I know people who do this!) and you're probably a borderline diabetic. Add another few grams of sugar each day and you've just shaved 10+ years off your life.

Is this poster harsh? Absolutely. Is it getting alot of press in New York since making it's appearance this week? Yes. Is is helping to get the point across that we need to be aware of what we choose to put in to our bodies? Hopefully so.

If you're interested in seeing how your sugar intake is potentially affecting your health, click here.

Train hard; stay strong.

Peace.

Although I don't live in NY, I've heard all about the controversy surrounding this ad campaign. Controversial...yes, effective...YES.

Has anyone actually ever measured out 10-12 teaspoons of sugar into a glass? This is something I've done with my students to illustrate exactly how much sugar one is or could be consuming in one drink alone. Its pretty powerful once you can actually see it with your own eyes.

    Thanks for this susan.

I love that ad!! Is it harsh? Maybe. Is it necessary? YES! I just hope it will wake some people up to what they are putting into their bodies...

I love the billboard ad! I hope there are some showing energy drinks as well. I love the line "If you drink two of these beverages per day, you're probably fat"! The point that "Sugar Kills" needs to be out there and not covered up by statements like "A non-fat food".

    Great Stuff!!!

ps. I just got wind of "The Cookie Diet" and it smells really bad. Eat some 'special cookies' twice a day as a meal replacement and then have a 300 calorie dinner...800 cals/day!? More insanity.

    have a great holiday weekend

Mike, I heard about that cookie diet .... crazy!!!! Eat cookies and lose weight. There are a good deal of folks who will flock to that in droves.

Contrary to what many people believe .... if you starve yourself (and have more than 5% bodyfat which um, most of us do), you will lose weight.

Is there such a thing as the body going in to "starvation mode"? Sure - there was a ton of research about it back in the 1940s. It's just not what these trainers lead everyone to think. Basically, you'll lose weight, but it will typically result in a host of mental ramifications and once you start consuming calories again, you'll typically regain extra weight.

So, warning to those of you going on the cookie diet -- expect to feel depressed, suffer from bouts of hysteria and a decline in rational thinking (concentration, judgment). Oh, and while you will lose weight while you're on the diet - expect to regain that plus a few extra pounds down the road.

It truly is amazing how much sugar Americans eat these days. I don't know the exact statistic off the top of my head, but it is pounds and pounds of sugar. Drinking one soda a day will add up.

It's so bad for you, just awful. It just another reason for obesity in the country (and the world)

In 1984 I read a book called "Sugar Blues" which caused me to give up refined sugar for 11 years. Prior to reading the book I regularly would consume 2 boxes of Girl Scout's Thin Mint cookies and chase them with a 2 liter bottle of Coke. These days I don't consume sweets on a daily or even weekly basis and I use Stevia in my beverages. We here in the US need to "wake up and smell the coffee--without sugar" if we want to regain our health. We need to change our eating, and drinking, paradigm.

    Great Post!!

Hey gang, I'm thrilled that this post has received such outstanding feedback from all of you! I'm also thrilled that there are organizations will to take "risks" in their advertising. Sometimes we really just need to have things thrown in our face in order to realize change.

    Have a great weekend all!

Love this billboard, thanks for posting it! This is the first I've heard of it but I think I'll do some searches to read about the controversy.

I gave up all regular consumption of soda and artificial sweeteners back in April and I really feel much better now. My mood has improved a lot and I'm glad I did it. That combined with a whole new attitude about healthy eating and exercise has allowed me to lose around 62 pounds.

It's really an eye opener to actually measure the foods that go into your body.

When I was a child I used to have 10 sugars in my tea and one less I would no about it. Nowadays, I don't take sugar in my tea and my sodium level intake is fairly low too.

I stopped this myself but my weight was reduced by a new diet method I found here for anyone who is interested.

This is a great article! I remember seeing a interview with Jillian Michaels that strikes a chord with me every time I think about drinking a soda... it's very simple, "Don't Drink Calories!"

I've noticed recently that a lot of so-called "healthy" drinks and sodas claim to be so because they use cane-sugar instead of manufactured products, like the infamous corn-syrup, to sweeten them. Although it is obviously better to consume natural sugar than corn-syrup it is still some form of sugar that you are consuming, and it seems like some folks are forgetting this simple fact.... missing the forest for the trees as it were.
